Ted in Breese Dear Ted, It's a simple fix but you will need two people. Glass sliding doors run on any va- riety of rollers and tracks. If the door is no longer gliding easily, the bearings in the rollers have deteriorated. If it is a nylon roller, the ny- lon roller is simply cracked, chipped, or worn down to the point that the door is drag- ging on the track. Open the door half way and, with the help of another person, lift the door and pull the bottom of the door to the inside of the house. You should then be able to drop the head of the door out of the track and have the sliding side of the patio door free. Set it on edge and remove the roller as- sembly on the bottom of the door: Most hardware stores carry universal rollers that will fit into most patio door track configurations. Dear Answerman: We recently bought a new home and are going to finish the basement. I know a base- ment bedroom must have an egress window and that's why I need to ask a question, actually I have two questions but they are both about the circuit breaker panel. The egress window and circuit breaker panel are both on the same wall and about 3 foot apart. That means that the circuit breaker panel will be in the bedroom--is that legal? I asked the electrician that wired the house and he said it could be in the bed- room but not in the closet. My wife asked another elec- trician and he said "definite- ly not". Who is right? Also, are electrical panels required to be marked? H&J in Aviston Dear H&J, Circuit breaker panels are not allowed in a bed- room. This takes a little ex.- planation so bear with me. The National Electric Code (NEC) does not directly ad- dress placing breaker boxes in bedrooms. The adoption of article 210.12 of the NEC in 1999 requires arc fault circuit interrupt (AFCI) out- lets in all bedrooms. Amend- ments to this article in the 2002 NEC requires all "oth- er" electrical circuits in bed- rooms to be AFCI-protected i.e. smoke alarms, intercoms etc. Since breaker boxes can- not be AFCI-protected, plac- ing them in bedrooms is a code violation. Marking or labeling is required by code. Labeling circuit breakers and fuses is not only a good idea so that you know the location and devices they serve, but also a National Electrical Code requirement. In article 408.4 it states the need for such a directory stating, "Every cir- 'cuit and circuit modification shall be legibly identified as to be its clear, evident, and specific purpose or use." In article 110.22 it states, "Each disconnecting means shall be legibly marked to indicate its purpose unless located and arranged so the purpose is evident. The marking shall be of sufficient durability to withstand the environment involved." A permanent marker is a nice choice for marking in this case. But that's not all.
